Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 sets the tax year

For vehicle donations, the IRS looks at the actual transfer date. If your car is picked up on or before December 31, the donation applies to that tax year; January pickups count for the next year’s return.

Form 1098-C for larger deductions

If your vehicle sells for more than the IRS reporting threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098-C. You attach this to your tax return when you itemize to substantiate your charitable vehicle deduction.

Deduction equals sale price in most cases

Typically, your deductible amount is the gross sale price Heritage for the Blind receives when your vehicle is sold, not a price guide estimate. Your receipt will show this figure once the sale is completed.

30-day acknowledgment window

IRS rules require a written acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale or, in some cases, within 30 days of donation. Heritage for the Blind provides this receipt so you have proper documentation for your records.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To use a vehicle donation as a federal tax deduction, you typically must itemize deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Check with a tax professional to see what’s best for your situation.

FAQ

What is the absolute IRS deadline for a car donation this year?
For your donation to count for this tax year, the IRS requires the vehicle to be actually donated by December 31—that means the pickup and transfer must be completed by then. With Appalachian Autos, if you contact us by around December 27, we can normally secure a pickup by December 31 in most West Virginia areas.
Does scheduling near Christmas limit my chances of a Dec 31 pickup?
Pickups can get busier in late December, but Heritage for the Blind schedules Monday–Saturday all year, including Christmas week, in most locations. If you reach out by December 27–28, we can usually find you a time before New Year’s. Waiting until the last one or two business days of the year can limit availability, so it’s best to call now.
Does the pickup date or the date I call determine my tax year?
The key date for the IRS is when the vehicle is actually transferred—practically speaking, that’s the pickup date. Calling or filling out the form in December isn’t enough by itself. Appalachian Autos helps you schedule a pickup by December 31, so your donation clearly falls into this tax year.
Can you really tow my car for free anywhere in West Virginia?
Yes. Whether you’re in Charleston, Huntington, Wheeling, Beckley, Morgantown, Parkersburg, Martinsburg, or a nearby town, Heritage for the Blind arranges free towing. Your car can be non-running, high-mileage, or damaged. As long as we can safely access the vehicle and you have a signed title, we’ll pick it up at no cost to you.
What paperwork do I need for a year-end car donation?
You mainly need a properly signed West Virginia vehicle title and your valid identification. At pickup, the driver will help you complete any necessary transfer paperwork. After the vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends you a written receipt—sometimes including Form 1098-C—so you can document your charitable deduction.
How quickly will I get my tax receipt after donating?
Once your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind typically mails you a written acknowledgment and tax receipt within about 30 days. That document will show the sale price used to determine your allowable deduction. Even if the receipt arrives in January, your donation still counts for the prior tax year as long as pickup was completed by December 31.
Can I donate a car that doesn’t run or has been sitting?
Yes. Non-running, undriven, and high-mileage vehicles are all accepted in most cases. There’s no need for inspection, repairs, or detailing. Just tell us the condition when you call, so we send the right tow equipment. The tow is still free, and as long as pickup is done by December 31, the donation can apply to this tax year.
